Irazu is on the shelf for now.

Well, I didnt place in the 2009 Animation Magazine Pitch Party comp and with that, Im taking it as a sign to put the project on the shelf for a while. Im too busy for the next 6 months with my full time job at the studio and the freelance illustration work I got for a new children's book, so Irazu, unfortunately will be saying 'see ya later'.
I dont know what I will do with it, maybe I will work on it down the track, think about the story some more till then and go back to it again another day. But I wont ever leave it, maybe its just not its time or Im not ready storywise for it.
At the end of the day, I dont think my story idea wasnt clear enough...or maybe the imagery was too much...at least I get a free magazine from it and my idea is safe from copyright as it has been published.
Congratulations to the winners and it was cool to see Stephen Silver's idea in there.

Animation Magazine Pitch Party Entry 2009

So I have finally decided to get Irazu
into the Animation Magazine Pitch Party
this year. I havent done much on this
blog because I haven't had much
personal time to dedicate to Irazu, but
this year I got to spend some time on it
and fiddle around with the characters.
I still have to nut down some stories
for the bible and a solid selling story.
Fingers crosses someone on the
judging panel likes the look and idea
enough to give it a go.
Second and third prize are pretty good
too and there is also an online voting
pole for readers choice.

What I made a while ago...

I made this a while ago, a test with the old Pequita and Irazu design from earlier this year...and from all those storyboards and BGs I was doing...anyway, this is what came of it. I would of done the whole thing (would of loved to), but I changed jobs and abandoned the design for a new toony one, one that would be easier to animate. Now that the design had changed, its kinda pointless continuing it...but thats the whole point of concepting, evolving. Also Irazu's design has changed too. So now Ive changed jobs and finished doing some colour design work for a music video, Im back onto the Irazu production bible...instead of TRYING to find time to make my own episode, im just going to make the pitching package and get that done...before some other job comes in and snatches me away!

At least I know this would of looked semi-decent...

Melbourne Trip

Here are some photos from the trip. We went to the Pixar exhibition and saw the Zoetrope, as well as catching up with some friends including Mike Chavez. There were some great alleyways with graffiti and other stuff!

Maik pretty much hates the Shrek design as much as I do, we cant get over the amount of merchandise there is, as well as the hideous amounts of different designs of Shrek...HORRIBLE!
Nothing against Dreamworks, loved Prince of Egypt...just enough of Shrek already.

Little Pequita's Room

I did a quick sketch and decided to give it some colour. I imagine this is Pequita's room from when she was a little girl, there are sloth drawings on the wall and a sloth plush toy on her bed.

Storyboards & Rough Backgrounds

Irazu storyboards are done before background designs, therefore I
can see
if there are any re-uses & how the backgrounds are going
to be layed
out to best frame the characters.

Colour Scripts, Tests, Widgets....etc

I think its important to at least have done one colour test for any kind of animation production. You get a head start on lighting and colour co-ordination between the characters and backgrounds. It saves a lot of um-ing and arh-ing when building a background for the scenes.
These images (above & below) were taken from rough thumbnail boards I did with a felt pen.

Pequita Florence model...update

I have updated Pequita's character design. You will see slight differences that I should of applied in the first place...and since she is a girl on the net, I can give her a little more 'perkyness' in her chest.
Below is the old turnaround I did.

Rest In Peace Chelsea Thomas

Our Family Dog and last pet Chelsea Thomas passed away this weekend from heart complications.
She was a very loving human-like dog and always had a smile on her face and wagged her tail.
We will miss her very much and the twelve years which she shared with us.
In loving memory, Chelsea Thomas 31/08/95 - 27/01/07

Completed My Honours Project

Well, I have come to the end of my Animation Honours Degree and bound my 'Art Of Irazu' book. I have great comments from fellow students and friends. I would love to make this into a feature, series, game or comic.
For now I'll keep it in my back pocket.
Thanks...

Lab

This is the lab where the sloths are experimented on. The colour test is below, i havent really finished the final but I think it communicates a cold environment.

Tankroom

This is one of the first ideas that came to my mind for 'Irazu'. A tank room that went deep down and contained tanks of dead failed mutant sloths. I like the purple environment, it reflects the mysteriousness of Pequita's discovery and the events that may occur at the end of the bridge. In the final painting I wanted the colours to de-saturate in the distance.

Spooky Cage Room

I have experimented with different angles of the cage room (handpainted), where the sloths are kept before experimentation.
The final images are in digital paint.

Whilst Waiting For My Hair To Dry...

I have finally found time to start giving details for these 'Irazu' images. It isnt meant to be shrouded in mystery. The weird Rashman Cubism is dedicated to Maik Hempel's hilarious series 'Rashman' which you can see the first episode at www.splicefest.com Its very different to the work here, but in episode 2 and 3 (currently being made) I paint the backgrounds, which is different to the style you see in the 'Irazu' work. Below is an example of the backgrounds in Rashman, designed by Maik Hempel and coloured by yours truely in photoshop.
Please vote for my film 'Vial of Youth' at Aniboom www.aniboom.com from the 17th of September 2006. Hopefully I can have it running on here as soon as i get its file size down.
Anyway, have a read of my descriptions of the 'Irazu' artwork and im going to go dry my Lara Croft Locks...

Rash Cubism

...you see the art of the Rashman and Rashpocket pheno can be seen here in its highest artistic state....
Ahhh! What am i going on about, this bit of artwork has nothing to do with Irazu!
Sorry...

Lift Shaft Escape

This is the lift shaft that Irazu escapes through carrying Pequita. He climbs up, latches onto the beams and pulls the doors open with his claws. The guard who shot at Pequita lays at the bottom of the shaft.

The Tower

These are different views and moods of the jungle and the tower from colour key to finished digital painting.

Jungle Environment

Here you can see the process from sketch to colour experimenting to final digital painting. Its the view of the science facility from within the jungle. The warm colours direct your eye towards the tower breaching through the jungle growth.

Environment and Colour Design

This is the lab or science tower where Pequita worked and Irazu escaped from after she was knocked out (seen in the colour script). The tower is where the scientists work and Pequita thought she was doing good, breeding sloths. When actually she was part of her father's evil plan to use mutant sloths to dig out mines. The tanks which hold all the failed sloths are deep under ground and Irazu is the only successful experiment.
I intend to paint this sketch, perhalps with the colours in the test above.

Colour Tests

Voodoo Village Concept

Im experimenting with colour and mood here. I wanted to create a voodoo village where Pequita lives near. The village people are actually not that nasty but have an image to uphold. I started with a digital colour thumbnail and then tried a larger version with more detail. I also tried a blue version in another location but hand painted. Then ive recreated the scene in flash, to see if there is a change in the atmosphere depending on the medium.

Colour Script

This is a colour script for a few sequences I wrote. It basically outlines the discovery of the collection of dead experimental mutant sloths and Irazu.

Colour Designs

This is a selection of colour concepts for future paintings and keys, as well as some colour tabs and plant designs.
